Background

Following a competitive tender process, Reconomy Connect became the national waste management partner for Clancy Group in March 2025. Covering all Clancy Group depots and projects across the UK, Reconomy Connect were tasked with ensuring compliance with the latest Simpler Recycling legislation, improving recycling, segregation rates and delivering cost efficiencies.

Prior to mobilisation, we conducted 28 site visits across all of Clancy’s depots throughout a 1 week period in March 2025. These visits enabled a clear understanding of existing container infrastructure, the types and volumes of waste being generated, and the services required to achieve both compliance and sustainability targets. With this groundwork in place, we were in a strong position to begin mobilisation on 1st April 2025, following Simpler Recycling guidelines.

Simpler Recycling Services Roll-Out

Having carried out these site visits prior to mobilisation, Reconomy Connect were well equipped to map the volumes and types of waste produced across Clancy’s operations, including cardboard, food waste, construction materials, timber, and hazardous streams. This informed the recommendations for the most suitable mix of services at each depot.

Clancy Group already operated general mixed waste RoRo’s on their sites. However, in order to comply with the Simpler Recycling legislation, and to achieve better segregation, it was clear a different set-up was required. Reconomy Connect arranged for the delivery of recycling bins and FELs for municipal, food, and dry mixed recycling, while general construction waste was managed through skips, ROROs, hazardous waste containers, and grab wagons.

A phased approach was adopted to improve segregation. The large general waste ROROs were gradually removed and replaced with smaller general waste skips alongside segregated skips for wood, metal, and plastics. This shift not only improved recycling but also reduced overall disposal costs. In addition to providing new bins on site, Reconomy Connect also supported with staff adoption. This included conducting regular site assessments and toolbox talks to further support behavioural change, encouraging staff to adopt better practices in waste management.

All of this was achieved against a backdrop of national shortages of containers and vehicles caused by the legislative changes. Despite this, Reconomy Connect was able to draw upon our established supplier network and technology platforms to deliver a smooth and rapid implementation. By retaining around 80% of Clancy’s existing suppliers and introducing innovative solutions such as Site Buddy, the Tipping App, and PowerBi reporting, we ensured continuity of services while driving improvements.

Sharon Palmer of Clancy Group commented: “I am really impressed with the information that the Reconomy Connect site assessments give and the recommendations provided to improve services.”

Getting Smarter With Technology

Utilising Reconomy Connect’s technology stack was key for Clancy to drive efficiencies, and get eyes on crucial datapoints. Our Site Buddy app enabled Clancy staff to order waste services directly from their smart devices, reducing reliance on calls and emails. Meanwhile, the Tipping App digitised Waste Transfer Notes, giving Clancy’s grab wagon drivers the ability to record collections in real time, with all data uploaded to the Reconomy Connect portal. Crucially, the PowerBi reporting suite provided Clancy with detailed, real-time insights into waste movements, compliance documentation, and sustainability performance.

Continuously Driving Circularity

Within the first three months, Clancy saw measurable progress, including landfill diversion rates of more than 98% and significant improvements in segregation and site practices. Key to this success was going above and beyond to find circular solutions for more difficult and unusual waste streams, such as Clancy’s water meters.

Within the first three months, simpler recycling was in place across all depots and projects, and skip segregation was operational. Reconomy Connect’s continued site assessments and feedback enabled Clancy to address inefficiencies such as contamination, unauthorised container use, and the disposal of reusable items like pallets as general waste. In parallel, our Utilities team worked with depots to propose new practices for managing materials such as tarmac, soil, and stone, ensuring compliance while also reducing costs and carbon impact.

Headline Stats from April – Aug 2025:

  • Landfill diversion is over 98% for materials that can be diverted from landfill.
  • 357 containers delivered
  • 1440 further movements managed
  • 83 live contract locations
  • 1184t material managed
  • 69 site waste appraisals.
