Sustainability and social value

Environmental sustainability has been part of our business strategy since our inception in 1994. Many of the greatest pressures we collectively face come from an over-reliance on the limited resources our planet makes available to us, and the impact that their overuse has on the environment. Through our many years of waste management knowledge and expertise, we are well placed to advise our clients on how to maximise resource usage, but it is critical that we practice what we preach.

Sustainability is the core to our overall business strategy and we believe this makes us a better company to work for, to do business with and to invest in.

Three core values that underpin our strategy are..

Environmental

We'll reduce our impact by working with customers and suppliers to develop circular solutions, reducing materials used and increasing the value of materials to be disposed of.

Social

We'll use our unique position working with customers and suppliers to invest in and build community relationships. Promoting volunteering, seeking to address the skills gap and barriers to employment.

Business

We'll ensure compliance, maximise efficiency and work with our suppliers, including voluntary, community social enterprises, small and medium enterprises, to develop innovation through partnerships, focusing on customer needs.

Reconomy Social Value Programme (RSVP)

The Reconomy Social Value Programme (RSVP) gives back to communities both locally and nationwide. Through increased social value, we can bring about change to the environmental sector, address the industry’s skills gap and help our customers meet their objectives.

  1. Bridging gaps for young people leaving care: in partnership with the National House Project to provide internships and work experience for young people leaving care.
  2. Breaking barriers for hard-to-reach groups: in partnership with RMF, we’ve created Reconomy FreshStart to provide training and employment support to vulnerable groups.

Reconomy Environmental Action Plan (REAP)

The principal goal of REAP is to achieve net zero carbon across the Reconomy companies by 2028. To successfully deliver this, we are setting science-based targets linked to a carbon reduction plan that we will allow us to work smarter, greener and more efficiently.

Through our industy-leading knowledge and expertise, we will work alongside our customers to reduce their waste and carbon. We will encourage our suppliers to improve their working practices and support them towards circular economy thinking.

Reconomy Social Enterprise

The Reconomy Social Enterprise Community Interest Company (CIC) serves as an umbrella organisation for various social enterprises and charities. These enterprises address challenges from managing hard-to-recycle materials to helping socially disadvantaged and vulnerable people access employment

Through Reconomy Social Enterprise CIC, we create partnerships between the charities we work with and Reconomy customers to find new, innovative uses for preloved or surplus materials. This simultaneously drives circular practices, social value, and community connection. By building new material streams, we help businesses find uses for surplus materials, giving them a new life and diverting them from landfill.

Closing the circularity gap

Reconomy’s #CloseTheGap campaign looks at the circularity gap to see the difference between the world we have now and the world we could have. It is important for every business to actively work to repair, reuse and recycle to prevent the creation of waste.

Right now, over 90% of the materials we extract from the Earth every year are wasted. We take, we use, we throw away. This is the circularity gap – the space between the world we have and the world we could create. One where resources don’t end in landfill, where waste is a failure of imagination, not a fact of business.
